Serena Williams Opts Out Of U.S. Open

Calling the decision to opt out of playing in the U.S. Open “one of the most devastating moments of my career”, a frustrated Serena Williams announces that she is continuing to allow her injured foot to heal. Shortly after winning at Wimbledon early in July, her right foot was injured by broken glass while dining at a restaurant. The injury required surgery which took place in mid July and since that time Williams has had to forfeit at least four tennis events that she would normally have participated in. This is sad news for the U.S. because Serena was the favorite to win the Open this year. It also means that she and sister, Venus, will not compete in the doubles tournament to defend the title that they won last year. Instead, Venus, who has been dealing with her own troubled knee, will compete in the singles division.
