Cheerleading Tryouts: What you need to know to be prepared
Trying out for a cheerleading team can be one of the most exciting and scary experiences in a young girl’s life. To make a high school or lower cheerleading team it is essential to come prepared for try-outs. Here are some tips to help you be ready for your cheerleading experience.First of all, make sure you know the requirements for your cheerleading squad. Many teams require at least some basic tumbling skills, such as proficient cartwheels and round-offs, and quite a few are now requiring more advanced skills including back handsprings or even back tucks. Other requirements may include passing grades for a school cheerleading squad, a knowledge of basic cheering skills and jumps, splits, and the ability to make cheering and fund raising events. Talk to the cheerleading director or coach if you are considering trying out for the team to learn what requirements your squad has. This person may also be willing to help you learn these important skills before try-outs begin.
Once you have determined the requirements for your squad, you should get to work right away improving your cheerleading skills. Many of the things you will need to learn take time for your body to be able to do. For example, learning the splits is a process that can take several months depending on your current skill level. I will be writing articles with recommendations on stretches you can do to be able to do the splits and to improve overall flexibility.
I recommend getting ready for try-outs by first improving the flexibility of your body. If you are new to cheerleading and tumbling, you should spend at least 20 minutes every day just stretching. There are many stretches you can do to increase your flexibility in your legs, back, and arms. Flexibility is important to have in everything a cheerleader does.
Tumbling is another important aspect of cheerleading. It is important to take one skill at a time and learn each completely before moving to the next skill to insure confidence and gracefulness. Some things to watch for when doing any tumbling skills are hand placement and alignment. Your body should always travel in a straight line. Start with the cartwheel. It may to helpful to draw a chalk line to make sure your leading foot, hands, and landing position are in one straight path.
RobbinsSports.com sells a cartwheel mat that can be used to learn and practice hand placement. Once you are confident with your cartwheel, switch to learning round-offs. Video tape yourself performing these skills and see how you look. Make sure your legs are straight when in the air and that tumbling looks smooth and easy.
Once you have learned the tumbling skills mentioned above, you are ready to learn to do a back handspring. When learning more advanced tumbling skills, it is important to have an instructor and spotter present. This will help insure that you learn these skills correctly and prevent injury. An instructor can also trouble-shoot your tumbling and help you develop these skills more quickly than on your own. An instructor will likely have you start by learning to do a walk-over and practicing handstands. You can work on these skills on your own so you are ready to advance more quickly when you begin working with an instructor. There are mats that are designed to assist learning back handsprings including the American Athletic Handspring Trainer and the American Athletic Training Wedges. Back handsprings are designed to be done on their own and in tumbling passes. Standing back handsprings are sometimes incorporated into cheers and are often more difficult than round-off back handsprings. A back handspring can take up to a year for a dedicated beginner to do it confidently on her own. If you have previous tumbling experience, that time can be shortened significantly.
For try-outs, you may have to show that you can do a standing back handspring if your squad requires this skill for cheers. Squads are more likely to require this skill if they compete in national cheerleading competitions. You will probably also be required to put together a tumbling pass to perform before the judges. This tumbling pass will require your best tumbling skills and should begin and end with cheering. When cheering in a tumbling pass, as with every time you cheer, it is appropriate to yell from the diaphragm cheers such as “go team” and “we’re number 1”. Yelling from the diaphragm will protect your voice and sound better than screaming. Yelling sounds like “Whoo” is not appropriate for cheering, and most judges will doc your score for doing so.
You will also need to be able to do jumps for cheerleading try-outs. These include the spread eagle, toe-touch, front hurdler, and right herkie and left herkie (also know as side hurdler). Ask the cheerleading coach or someone else like a former cheerleader to help you with technique for your jumps. Important things to remember are to point your toes, place your arms correctly as they should be for the particular jump you are doing, and above all smile, smile, smile. Once you have the technique down you should work on improving the height of your jumps and the height of your legs when in the air.
You will probably be required to learn some new cheers and a dance the week of try-outs. New cheers and dances are generally used to make try-outs fair for all the participants. Everyone has the same amount of time to learn the try-out material. Be sharp in all of your movements. Your arms should remain tight when doing cheers so they do not look sloppy. Cheer loudly, clearly, and not too fast so you are easy to understand. Work on your facial expressions. Pull out that video camera again and record yourself doing the cheers and dance. This will help you see where you can use improvement or to make sure you look happy and confident. Practice all you can so you know the material completely. You don’t want to be the participant who is watching and copying others doing the dance beside you. Ask other people including the cheerleading coach if they will watch you cheer or dance and critique you. This will help you get over the try-out jitters and can be really helpful.
When tryouts come, be prepared. Bring a water bottle, towel, snacks, extra hair bands, your good luck charm, and anything else you think you may need to help you feel prepared and relaxed.
That is it. These are all the skills you will need to know for try-outs. Once you have done all you can do to prepare, try not to be nervous. Just remember to smile all the time and make eye contact with the judges. Be as confident as possible. If you don’t have the best techniques for all the skills, don’t worry. Many times, cheerleaders who can’t do more than a cartwheel make the team over girls with more advanced skills because they are fun to watch and look like they love cheering. Be positive during the try-outs and once again, SMILE!
heyyy, im going to try out for a Jr High team and i cant do chartwheels or tumbles or back hand springs …….. do you still think i could make the team ? please e-mail me bak that would be AWESOME .

Hey Brittany,
Even if you do not have tumbling skills you still have a good chance of making the team. Be confident, happy, and fun to watch. Those are the most important qualities of a cheerleader. Everything else can be taught. Let me know if you have any other questions.

My name’s Hailey and I’m trying out for the cheer team in my high school. I used to do competitive gymnastics and had a wide range of skills which are certainly beyond what is required to make the squad. The only problem is, I quit several years ago do to the stress and haven’t practiced since! I tried lately and my back walkovers left my muscles aching and I was too scared to even attempt simple things as a back handspring. How do I get over my fear and get back some of what I lost.

Hi! I have a problem. Practice and Tryouts for cheerleading at my high school is this Monday. I am a happy person so smiling and cheering won’t be a problem for me. I’ve got the arm motions down pack. I can do most of the jumps. I need help with the toe touch though. I almost can do a split (it looks like a side hurdle on the floor.) I have no experience in cheerleading, whatsoover, so I can’t do tumbles that well, let alone do a cartwheel. Please give me advice at soon as you are able to. I hope you are able to before Monday.

Hey Everyone,
Good luck with try-outs! Here are some answers to the questions above. First of all Danielle, if you can’t do a back handspring work on something else you can really stand out on. Whether you are an awesome dancer, or you have killer jumps, so can still impress the judges and make the squad even without a back handspring.
Hailey, it sounds like you are on the right track. Since you did quite a bit of tumbling when you were younger, your muscles are primed for doing those same things again. When you get back into the swing of things, it will be a lot easier for you than for someone who did not learn tumbling skills until they were in high school since they did not develop those muscles as much. I would recommend doing more walkovers, stretching, and tumbling basics for a week or so until your muscles get used to those movements again before you try anything dificult. The best way to gain your confidence back is to start slowly and build up to what you could do before. If you try something too quick and fail, if will be harder to gain back what you have lost. When you do decide to try harder skills again, make sure you start with a spotter and a good tumbling surface until you are confident again. You may want to consider joining a tumbling class at a gym so you can have a caoch help you get your skills back.
Tiff and Niki, it is awesome that you are thinking about try-outs this far ahead of time. You will have time to work on your skills and hopefully get them where you want them before try-outs begin. I will write another article about helpful stretches for you Tiff. In the mean time, work of overall flexibility and try doing walkovers to get your back and muscles ready for tumbling. For you Niki, I would go ahead and join a cheernastics class right away. I would say it takes about a year for people without previous gymnastics experience to develop a strong back handspring. They can help you with your flexibility and jumps too.
Chloe, the best thing I can tell you is to practice on your own and then in front of other people. Once you have the skills you need by yourself, you just need to get over being nervous when people watch you. That is what cheerleading is all about. To do that, you just have to cheer and tumble in front of people until you feel confident doing it. Star in front of a good friend or your mom: someone that is not very critical.
I hope this helps all of you with your indiviual needs. Good luck!

As a former cheerleader, I think that everyone of you has a chance of making your teams if you believe in yourself and try your best to prepare. In the comments for the blog article about doing cheerleading jumps, I gave a stretch tip for learning to do the splits. Some of you might find that helpful. As far as back handsprings go, the best thing to do is to get an instructor so you learn the right way and don’t get hurt. Even if you can do these things, you can still make the team, so don’t get discouraged!

I am going to try out for my High School team in about 7 months or so. I am taking up two tumbling classes but still i’m super nervous. I can get the back-handsrping with a spott or on the trampoline, but my brother says most JV and varsity cheerleaders can already do back tucks! I’m also nervous because there are 2 other girls trying out that have been in gymnastics like all thier life. Do you have any tips on learing the backhandspring faster or improving more overall? By the way I’ve been taking tumbling for almost 4 years already but can’t seem to get the back-handspring, I just freak out.

I have already made my football and basketball Jr. High cheerleading squads, but I wish that I could do more tumbling and flexibility stunts. I have tried to learn a back-walk over, but I can barely do a front walk-over, and I don’t know what I am doing wrong. With basketball season coming soon I would love to have tumbling stunts to do on the court and in half-time cheers. Along with stunts, I have been trying to learn the splits so some time now. I cannot get very far, but I don’t want to give up because a few of the other girls on my squad can do them, and we are working on all of us being able to do them for hello cheers and such. Please help!

:Over extend toe touch
:Herkie
:Scorpion
:Heel stretch
:Round off
:Standing back hand spring
:Cartwheel

Though I’m scared that I’m not going to make it. The school I’m going does not required tumbling. I have really sharp movements. I’m really shy so I don’t like to yell, what should I do?

Hey guys! I’m a freshman in High School, and yes, I made the Cheerleading Squad. For girls that want to make it, plan wwwaaayyy earlier than they tell you that try-outs are coming. I also suggest joining a local cheer team. But before you join, stretch for like 20 minutes a day, and excersize. Cheerleading is hard work, and it’s much harder than it looks. But do the beginning class first. Trust me, if I didn’t take the beginning class first, i would be struggling in competition. It teaches you the basic stunts, easy tumbling skills (which helps for hard tumbling), and lots of simple cheers. Plus it also gives you extra time to practice before joining competition. Practice tumbling and stunts on yoga mats and trampolines. Practice a lot. Remember, practice makes perfect. When you join competition, thats when it starts to get tough, so be warned. You usually have more than 1 class and it is usually longer. That’s also where you have to start learning Pyramids and the Basket Toss and such. Be prepared to learn that. Try praciticing with your friends. Hold each other up by one person holding out they’re hands and the other steps on them, and then the one that’s holding them is holding them good and tidy. But you can’t do this on a hard surface, or anywhere you can get hurt. You also have to have lots of supervision and a pro. spotter with good support in order to do this on your own. Once you join competition, it may be really tough at first, but you’ll get used to it and your cheer ability will grow. Remember, not every cheerleader doesn’t need to know tumbling, but i suggest atleast learning the front roll (summersault, too easy!) the Cartwheel, and the Round Off. But to be a cheerleader, you need good flexibilty, good jumps and stunts (practice, practice, practice!) and lots of school spirit. If you can’t enroll any classes, just practice a lot at home (without getting hurt), and do your reasearch online, in cheer books, videos, etc. to learn the jumps\stunts and some cheers. Good dancing will help a bit, too. Don’t overdo your cheers when you try out, you may loose some points off your score sheet. Even if your school’s cheer team doesn’t involve tumbling, still do something if you know any, your points may get higher. Don’t freak out either, smile, and do the best you can. Show them that you know some cheerleading, beginners may not be accepted well enough. You don’t have to show them everything, if you make the team, your still learning how to cheer better. If you don’t make it, it OK. It’s not the end of the world. I’ve gotten rejected by trying to make the girls Basketball Team, and i’ve gotten rejected in trying to make the girls Soccer Team, Softball Team, lots of things. Try joining the Drill Team or the Pep Club if you don’t and try out next year. #1 Rule: DON’T GIVE UP!!!

I’m trying out for basketball cheerleading, but I can’t do a round off, or a handspring. I can barely do a toe touch!! I’m so scared to tryout because me and my 2 best friends are trying out, and I’m afraid of not making it! I’d be so embarrassed. Do you have any tips for me for trying out or for any stunts I may need to do or learn?
Comment by Carly — April 16, 2007 @ 10:53 pm
how much would a running front tuck be worth in jr high tryouts?

Hello, if you are trying out for a cheerleading squad and you’re afraid you won’t make it… DON”T WORRY. Back when I was in 6th grade I had to try out for my middle school cheerleading squad! I was pretty confident, since I had been cheering for four years before. However, when I read my paper it said” We are terribly sorry, but you have not made the squad” I was so upset, I didn’t know what to do. Although, I did try out my 7th grade year… making me on the squad my eigth grade year, and now its high school try outs. I must say I have never been this nervous, and I know some of the girls are better than me since I do no tumble, but I know I will be alright since my jumps are above average! All I can say is that be confindent, smile, and don’t look nervous.

Hi
I am thinking of trying out for my junior high team. I don’t understand what the difference between the cheer team and dance team is. They both cheer for basketball.. Also about tryouts what do you think are some basic skills needed to know for a seventh grader (me). I can pretty much do
-splits
-cartwheel
-and in just a little practice a pretty good round off
I have practicing a lot on herkie and toe touch…my feet just won’t go up. I am shy but i am hoping that a sport where it is made to yell will help me a lot. I just have to make the team. The tryouts are in a month so any advice would help
thanks

Hey, I have only 1 month exactly before the try-outs begin for my highschool cheerleading squad. I’m going to be a Junior next year… and my parents didn’t let me be in cheerleading till now that I begged them to put me into a class at least to see what there is to be done at the try-outs and hopefully I could make it this year or at least know exactly what I need to do for my senior year, because I really wish I could get in the squad my senior year at least, and I haven’t done any cheerleading, but I did 2 years of gymnastics about 3 years ago. Do you think that will help if I take 2 to 3 classes a week this whole month that I have left to go to the try-outs? Or should I just wait till my senior year and start getting ready from now?
Comment by Lisa — July 7, 2007 @ 1:24 am
I can also do a cartwheel, summersault, and splits…would that and the 1 month instruction be enough to make the team, or not?

i’m a sophmore in high school right now and i was on the cheer squad in middle school, and i’ve been in gymnastics for a while but im still too afraid to do my backhandspring and i also have a big problem with jumps. The other difficulties are that i made the dance team as a freshman but i quit to concentrate more on gymnastics & and other things, also i do have a problem with being shy but i am very good at doing the cheers and such.So i was wondering what i could do to help all of these problems i’m having idk if i should call the coach and tell her about my problems..but i dont want her to think of me as a suck up.

Brittany,
Of course you could still make the squad! Just show the judges your promise. They aren’t looking for perfection; they are just looking to see who has POTENTIAL. Just remember to go out there, smile, and even if you mess up, just have fun with it. Tumbling isn’t even required at my school, so just show the judges how perky and happy you are to be there, and if they have any taste, you’ll make the squad! Good luck, and hope you make the team!

Also, I have a little (huge) stage freight problem sometimes. I dont even dance in front of my parents, let alone the whole school. Anyway, what do you recomend for upper body strength excercises? HEY!! this is for comment #119. Gurl let me tell u something. if u want to try out then do it. i am a senior at warren high school and i have been helping our junor high girls prepare for try out the past 2 years. i have seen gurls who cant jump or flip but they were just sharp and had good facials make it. always remeber that smiles cover up mistakes. never stop in the middle of your cheer if u mess up make it look like u meant to do that. just go out there and go your best but over all have fun. it would also be a good idea to tumble on your way in as a entrance. SO TRY OUT!! lol.

What it is,
My name is Shanika Wright and I’m a sixth grader who tried out for cheerleading and made it. I wanted to leave a comment for the girls who are feeling a bit nervous and say it’s alrite because it is so much more comfortable then your mind can make it out to be. You have to learn a cheer chant jumps and basic gymnastics(cartwheel and round off). After the first time it gets so much more easier and comfortable to try out. Just don’t let your nervousness get the best of you and show some spirit! I can guarantee that if you don’t show spirit you most likely won’t make the team. YOu have to go to cheerleading camp which seems like it’s going to be pretty hard work and a lot of fun. I’m so ready for 7th grade man. I hope i some what helped somebody.

Hey. I am going to be trying out for a Jr. High cheerleading team. I can do roundoffs, cartwheels, front handsprings, and frontflips but i cant do backhandsprings on my own. I can only do backhandsprings and backtucks on mats and on trampolines. Will i still be able to make it?

hi so I am trying out for junior high cheer leading. The thing is that i used to do dance class and i was in gymnastics but it has been so long that i can not remember anything. I mean i can do a cartwheel but not as good and with my handstands i could not do them but i have been practicing also with my split i have been practicing for so long and now that i am stretching more i can almost do them but it is all the other stuff i am afraid of doing. I really want to do this i mean cheer leading is my dream but can i really do this
