How to do Cheerleading Jumps

![]() |
Before you begin any jumps, be sure to stretch your body completely to prevent injury. You should be sure to stretch your back, arms, legs, and stomach. To perform each jump correctly, it is important to learn to do them using the correct format. Although it may vary from squad to squad, the following is a common format taught at many national cheerleading camps, and is the standard format for doing jumps.
The Prep
Each jump should be done in eight counts and begin with the prep. For the prep, the body should be tight with the legs together and the hands straight down by the sides with fingers together. On count one, the hand should be brought to a clasped position in front of the body with the elbows pointed downward. This position should be held for count two. On count three, the arms should be extended to a high V with the hands in fists and you should go onto your toes. This position will be held for the fourth count. Remember that your arms should be kept slightly in front on the body when making a V rather than directly out to the sides so it does not look awkward. During counts three and four, you should concentrate on gaining all the power you can from your legs. If your legs are tight and prepped correctly, your jumps will have the momentum to be higher and look more graceful. The success of your jump is greatly dependant on a good, balanced prep.
The Jump
Now you are ready for the jump. Your jump will be done on counts five and six. Bend your legs and gather all the strength you can to propel your body upwards while circling your arms inward in front of you. Your arms and legs should hit the proper position on six. The position of your arms and legs will depend on the jump you are performing.

The Landing
You will land with your feet together on seven with your legs bent to absorb the shock. The top of your body will be slightly forward to maintain good balance, and your arms will be extended downward with your fingers extended straight down with palms inward next to the sides of your knees. This position will be help for the eighth count. After count eight, you can stand straight up again and prepare for the next jump or other element.
The Spread Eagle
The spread eagle is one of the most elementary jump in cheerleading, and is therefore not as common as more showy jumps. To do this jump, extend your legs outward without rotating your hips back. Make sure your toes are pointed while in the air and your hands are in fists with your arms in the T position.
The Toe Touch
To do this jump, rotate your hips back and extend your legs upwards to the sides in a straddle position. Once again, your toes should be pointed, but make sure your hands are in fists and not extended like your toes. For many cheerleaders, the biggest challenge of this jump is to not actually reach for the toes. Keep your chest up and bring you legs up with pointed toes rather than reaching your arms or body downward towards your legs. It is better to have proper form and for your legs to be a little lower than to learn this jump incorrectly. Your first goal is to be able to bring your legs parallel to the ground, and then to the height of your hands. Once you reach these goals, do not stop there. Continue stretching and improving your jump until you can extend your legs further upwards. Extend your legs upward behind your arms once you have the ability to do so.
The Herkie
This jump is done by rotating your hip back and extending one leg upward to the side as if doing a half toe touch. Your foot on the extended legs should be pointed. The other leg should be bent backwards. The top of your leg to your knee will be straight out to the side with the lower part of your leg behind it. Your goal on this jump is for your bent leg to be parallel to the ground and your extended leg to reach as high as possible behind your arm.
The Front Hurdler
Extend your “favorite” leg forward and upward toward your head with your knee upward and your foot pointed. Your arms should be extended in front of you reaching towards your extended foot with the hands in fists. The other leg should be bent with the knee with the knee pointing towards the ground and the foot towards the sky.
The Table Top
One leg is bent in front of you with the leg across the body and the other leg is bent behind you. Try to keep the top portion of your back leg straight out to the side. Both of your legs should be parallel to the ground. The arms should be in a V.
The Tuck
Bring your legs up in front on you with your knees close to your chest. Your arms should be extended to the sides in a T position.
The Pike
Keep your legs together and bring them up straight in front of you with your toes pointed. Try to make your legs parallel to the ground. Also extend your arms in front of you on the sides of your legs with your hands in fists. Your body will bend forward as you reach towards your toes.
The Double Nine
Extend one leg in front of you with the toes pointed. The other leg should be bent at a ninety degree angle with your foot next to the knee of the extended leg. Both legs should be parallel to the ground as if you were sitting on a flat surface. The arms will mirror the legs. The arm on the same side of the body as the extended leg should be extended forward as far as possible with the hand in a fist. The other arm should be bent at a ninety degree angle with the fist next to the elbow of the extended arm.
Around the World
This jump is a combination of the pike and the toe touch. First jump into the pike position and then rotate the hips back bringing the legs into a straddle position. Arms will begin extended in front on you and then move into the T position as the legs are rotated to the sides. This jump requires proficiency in both the pike jump and the toe touch as well as a powerful jump that give you adequate time in the air to hit both positions.

this was not much help beacuse you need to give some pics.

Sorry about that girls. My husband and I are only a few weeks away from having our first baby, so it’s impossible for me to demostrate these jumps right now. However, I will ask my cousin to model for me and get some pictures posted soon.
Thanks, Lisa

Hi! I’m trying out for a high school cheerleading team, and I can do cartwheels and round-offs, but I’m having trouble doing the jumps…I at least want to know how to do one jump for tryouts, so which jump do you think is the easiest to learn?
Comment by Bre — July 18, 2006 @ 11:39 am
Hey, yeah I am also trying out for a high school squad and I am now a freshmen. I am just worried about me not being able to do a toe-touch or a herkie. I can do a hurdle but just not a toe-touch can I get some help please.
Comment by Kiele — July 24, 2006 @ 7:52 am
This is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo hard. I dont even know why I’m doing this i ‘m not in no squad but i will like to be in one a real one.Holla back at yall

Hey girls I’m having trouble getting this routines done. In my last message I forgott to say that i’m entering jr.high sone really sone and i herad they got cheerleading squad. I only know how to do carwheel, split and handstand. I already chose the song i just need to know how to do jumps and easy ones and afeacted ones.
Comment by Irina — August 7, 2006 @ 4:16 pm
Hey Girls,
In my opinion, the easiest of the advanced jumps to do is a herkie. This jump is fairly easy because you only have to extend one leg. That makes it easier to concentrate on getting that leg up high and your toe pointed. At the same time it is still a beautiful jump and very impressive.
For doing a toe touch, work on your flexibility on the ground first. Stretch your legs, arms, and back on a regular basis. The closer you get to doing the splits, the easier it will be to make the jump look awesome. If you are not a pro at the toe touch to begin with, that is okay, but don’t get used to having sloppy form just so you can touch your toes. It is better to keep your chest up and not be able to bring your toes all the way up to your arms at first. That way you do not have to correct bad habits in the future. As a helpful hint, your toe touch will look higher if you can roll your hips back more so your knee caps are facing up.

today is the day i get to tryout for the cheerleading i hope /wish incan make it
Comment by kierra — September 8, 2006 @ 10:57 am
I have a question about jump approach. What is more common, bringing the arms down from a high V and crossing them in front of the body, then whipping them to correct jump motion, OR from high V, you circle arms w/o crossing.
Comment by Kelley — September 18, 2006 @ 11:33 am
I am trying out for cheerleading, but I can’t do cart wheels, flips, splits or jumps. I am really outgoing and loud and I know all of the cheers. But for some reason, I just cannot get the jumps straight, both of my legs bend. Do you know of any excerices or anything to help me stretch my hamstrings and stuff so that when try outs come, I will be able to do a good jump. I also already knew how to do the counts, and i know what the jumps look like, but I just have problems getting my legs straight.
Comment by Natalie — September 18, 2006 @ 7:04 pm
It sounds to me like Gwen and Britanny must be trying out for the United States Special Olympic Cheerleading Team. Reading is difficult girls, but the two of you can do it if you try hard enough. If you are old enough to be cheerleading you are old enough to read books without pictures.

My Cheerleading try-outs are Oct. 23, and every night [starting tonight] I am going to do 50 sit-ups and 50 crunch. I currently weigh 102 pounds.
Will I lose any weight if I continue up until try-outs, and keep on going during and after.?
Also, will I get like a tighter stomach or anything.?
Help will be MUCH appreciated.!
Comment by Natalie — October 3, 2006 @ 11:46 pm
Natalie, by doing crunches and sit ups, you will probably actually gain weight, only because fat wheighs less than muscle. If you weight 102 right now, you may end up weighing around 105 by tryouts, but that still isnt bad at all. If you are trying to get toned, do the crunches, but also so calf raises and squats to strengthen your leg muscles (tight, toned legs are key as well). Good luck and remember to always eat properly when exercizing.

Comment by Cassie — October 12, 2006 @ 12:48 pm
cheerliding can not alwas be easy. you may have to do push ups.wall-sits and other hard stuff.it takes practice. my team has practice tus.-thr. the cheer compitishins are coming up and we have to work even harder than befor.im only 10 but if you keep trying you can do it.
Comment by amy warren — October 12, 2006 @ 2:51 pm
Better flexibility means better jumps. One trick I have found helpful for improving leg flexibility for jumps is to use something like a door frame to help hold your legs in a stretched position. That’s because it is hard to push yourself into a position that is slightly out of your current flexibility range and hold it without help. (This is why it is helpful for someone to push down on your back while doing a toe touch stretch for example.) Put each leg against the two sides of a door frame and scoot your body as for as you can forwrd into the doorway. Use the frame to help hold your legs apart for as long as you can. This may sound silly, but trust me it works. If you do this stretch every day, you should be able to do the splits in a matter of weeks, and have higher jumps.

Comment by bethany — November 14, 2006 @ 6:13 pm
i just made my cheerleadin squad about a month ago and at tryouts we were required to do 1 jump. i chose a hurckie because it is easy…well now we have to do toe touches…so i know how some of you feel if u cant do themm…well because i felt i couldnt do them very welli got online and find some stretched to help you! and they worked! my toe touches have improved majorly…..
1. sit in straddle posistion having 1 hand in front of u body and one behind. lift oposite leg of which hand is in fron(ex ig right hand is in front lift left led) bring you leg to you body so that your knee is facing backwards. do 5 times and switch legs(switch hands too) to that leg 5 times …dio both legs 3 times each.
2. Sit in straddle position both hand behind your body. sit as strait as possible. life legs up( they wont come high off the ground) keep them in the air for 5 secong. repeat 10 times…as you get better increase tha amount of time you hold up ur legs.
3. do the splits everynight…the better you can do the splits the better ur toe touched will be
4. do at leaset 10 toe touches a night. and make sure you strech!!!!!!!

Comment by Miya Watson — December 25, 2006 @ 12:03 pm
hey, i’m a high school cheerleader, and i’ve read some of what you guys have been saying and heres a few things ive encountered…
-don’t be a wreck at tryouts, you gotta stay cool calm and collected. just practice, and go into the tryouts thinking “ok im gonna do this, and im gonna do it right, and perfect”
-at tryouts, don’t worry about ur jumps… you will get a huge adrenaline rush right before you hit your jump, and it will be really really good, and high.
- tumbling wise… take classes ata local gym, dont try anything like back handsprings or tucks at home unless you know you can do them without a spot.
- CONDITION, CONDITION, CONDITION… every single day. every day stretch, and do your jumps, and after, do a 20 min cool down. do like 5 min wall sit, 5 straight min of crunches, like 50 calf rasies each side, and do some push ups to tone your body more. it honestly helps if you do it everyday.
good luck to everyone trying out…
have funn!!

Uhm, I am on the team at Cortney JHS and I am really bad at my toe touches adn herkies. I can’t get very high off the ground, my legs won’t go up or straight and they won’t rotate outwards, and on my herkies the other leg wont be flat or parallel. What are some things that I could do to REALLY improve my toe touches and herkies.
Help would be much appreciated from anyone and everyone.

I am planning on trying out for cheer, for the first time!
I am doing this on March 27.
I am sooooooooo nervous!!!
I have never been in gymnastics, or anything, besides a school dance class.
I am afraid i do not have as good of a chance as the other girls.
Tryouts are in 2 weeks!
I’m also afriad i will not make it, but i am trying hard to be positive.
I cannot do any jumps, nor back/front handsprings, not even a round off.
That is bad-huh?
I can only do back bends (not kick over) and cartwheels.
my dance teacher says im good at being percussive, but thats all.
Any advice???
i need some…now!!!!!!!!!
p.s. my b-day is in 3 days.
I will be bummed if i do not make it
p.s.s.!!! have any advice on getting better for next year, if we/i have no money for gymnastics, etc?
thank you sooooooooooooooooooooo much!!!!!!

As a former high school cheerleading coach I appeciate your site. I know how hard cheerleaders work and the stress that they put on their bodies. In order to help I developed a line of technical cheer apparel for practice. (www.pyraapparel.com) Check out my site and my youtube video featuring the PYRA girls.
Keep up the good work, Pam White

Eyy everyone,
Ive been in cheer for a while now (at the middle school) but am trying out for JV or Varsity (at the highschool) at the end of the month .
My jumps are good, but not the best.
My herkies and hurdlers are nothing to worry about, my toe touches need to get higher though, pikes too.
What exercises/stretches should I do ?
Oh, and I hurt my leg at a game like 3
weeks ago and haven’t been able to jump or stretch fully, so its hurting my chances.
Should I start stretching and jumping again or wait until it completely heals?
Any tips are thanked (:

oh and also,
I can’t find the creativity in me to make up a simple chant.
Any suggestions?
Key Words; Maroon, Gold, Trojans, PVHS,
Chant Ideas; A stomp/clap chant, general chant.
So far I’ve made up two, but they seem to classify as cheers more than chants.
Bleh.
Please helpp ?

Comment by Mariah — March 16, 2008 @ 9:25 pm
Hey Britt,
I’m was an eighth grader last year, and now cheering for a high school squad,
I tried out for cheerleading at my middle school going into seventh grade,
and I didn’t make it,
I wasn’t that into it at the time, but I’ve been in cheerleading and tumbling since I was about four,
I don’t know I guess I wasn’t “ecstatic” about making it,
so I didn’t have much spirit.
So, some tips for middle school tryouts would be, just like everyone says, PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. It really does make perfect, or at least close. And usually, you have to do jumps, maybe some tumbling, depending on your school, also cheers, chants and a dance. Most of the time they are fairly easy. The most common jump would be the Toe Touch, and to make it good, you have to stretch every single day, you don’t just wake up having the perfect TT from stretching two hours one night. You really have to love it, and want to do it. Cheerleading is my LIFE, I have put more into it than anything ever. It’s alot of fun once you make the squad, but you can’t be nervous either. Have lots of spirit, and SMMIILLEEEE! The judges really look at your face most of the time, and if they don’t think you really want to cheer for our school, they won’t think you deserve it. MAKE THEM LOOK, don’t be freaked out the day of tryouts. Your gonna be GREAT, okay once you get in there, everything gets better is what it seems like. It’s really not that bad, but give it your all.
Basically requirements would be:
Good grades, always keep focused in school. Don’t let cheerleading get in the way. You don’t ever want to be kicked of your squad after all your hard work.
Work on your jumps, stretching every day helps alot. And always keep your chest up in the TT and Herkie most of the time.
The dance, just practice it, they usually have two or three clinic days where they teach you the dance. And the cheer, and chants.
Don’t be nervous, everyone does fine, and if you don’t make it, but you still want to try out the next year, I’m sure you are more likely to make it the second time if you keep practicing.
(:

Hey!
Thanx to the site for the info on the jumps. Because of the it, I made the squad!
My advice is:
DON’T BE NERVOUS- Most of you might not be when you actually get out there anyway.
Go Big Red!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-]

OMG! i made my 7th grade cheer squad and for try-outs we had to do a toe-touch and another jump of choice ( toe-touch was required) but now we have practices twice a week , (they run from 2-3 hours per practice) and we work out A LOT . And my coaches said that i need to work on my toe-touches a little because my left leg doesn’t get as high as my right leg… is there any exersices that i could do that don’t take that muck time ( i have a VERY busy schedule ) and will help me get my left leg higher?????????
thx bunches!!
:-D
Comment by Amanda — May 10, 2008 @ 10:27 pm
I had that same problem happen to me…. one leg went higher than the other, and I did leg lifts which are when you sit on the ground , in a stradel position, put both hands in front of you, and alternate lifting one leg and then the other, and do 10 sets of 15 taking a ten second brether before each set

I am trying out for high school cheerleading next week but the practices start tomorrow.
It is required to do a toe touch in the jump sequence and i have never actually cheered before, just tumbled, so i’m not very good and i can’t get my legs up enough.
Do you have any advice for me to get my jumps at least a little better by tryouts?
